In the last 30 years, Canary Wharf has gone from up-and-coming to the go-to hotspot of the London Docklands for culture, leisure and business. In this time, the area’s transport system has also undergone many changes, with the extension of the Jubilee line and the introduction of the Docklands Light Railway. Next on the list is the most anticipated network of this decade – Crossrail, set to be introduced at Canary Wharf from 2018.
Canary Wharf is also one of the only stations to have undergone an extensive station revamp, with a brand new retail and public space – Crossrail Place – created especially to complement the new transport project.
Once services are introduced across the capital in December 2018, commuters travelling from Canary Wharf will be able to reach Liverpool Street in half the time that they do now – down from 12 minutes to six. Other key locations will be accessible in speedy times such as Paddington in Central London, just 17 minutes away, and Heathrow Airport, which will be only 39 minutes from Canary Wharf.
The DLR is London’s only automated metro system; built to serve the Docklands and its rapidly transforming business district. The line stretches from Stratford in the north to Lewisham in the south, and Bank and Tower Gateway in the west to Beckton and Woolwich Arsenal in the east, with now more than 117m passengers (2015/2016 figures) using the service every year compared to the 10m a year it transported back in the early 1990s.
Spanning from Stanmore in North West London and Stratford in East London, the Jubilee line is the youngest Tube service and, following the Olympic Games in 2012, is now one of the most popular of the Underground lines. With an average two minute journey time between stations, the Jubilee line connects to London’s entire transport network whilst crossing the capital in approximately 20 minutes.
Linking South Essex and East London, the A13 has steadily enhanced in recent years to accommodate the increasing number of people travelling into the capital, and now provides a three lane highway from Canary Wharf to the M25.
